Do Bengal Cats Make Good Pets?

  • November 10, 2023

There have been a lot of different things written about Bengal cats and the types of characteristics they tend to exhibit. However, not many have given much information on just what these cute cats are truly like to share a home with.

We hope to be able to give you a little more information on that as well as what kind of a pet you might expect them to be and whether or not they make good pets.  In this blog post we will cover:

  • Common Traits of Bengal Cats
  • Bengal Cats and Water
  • Do Bengal Cats Get Along with Children and Other Animals?

Common Traits of Bengal Cats

Bengal cats all have some pretty notable personality traits they share in common. But, as anyone who has owned any cat previously knows, each individual cat has their own personality. If you are considering bringing a Bengal cat into your home you probably should know a little about this beautiful feline before doing so.

  • If you are looking for a lazy cat who just lounges around the house and doesn’t do much then Bengal cats are not going to make good pets for you or your family. They are extremely active and athletic. This means that you will need to provide them with cat trees or platforms that will allow them to climb around on. They love to pounce on things, so it’s a good idea that you provide them with places/objects where they can do this type of activity.
  • The Bengal cat is known to be very intelligent. What this means is they can actually figure out how to do things that maybe other cats cannot do. Things such as figuring out how to open up doors, drawers and other things you might not want your cat to be doing. But don’t fret, because of their high intelligence they are also easy to train. So, this is a great trait that can make them good pets for those looking for a cat that is highly trainable.
  • Because of how inquisitive Bengal cats are, they truly love to try to get involved with all the activities that might be going on in their home and they tend to try to “lend a paw” so to speak with whatever you might be doing around the house.  Don’t get frustrated by this, remember that they’re just curious and want to be involved.
  • Bengal cats can be great pets for those who don’t want to have to worry about grooming. They have a nice short dense coat of fur and really don’t shed very much. They don’t need any kind of grooming except for clipping their claws and believe it or not, they may never need a bath their entire lives. An interesting fact about Bengal cats is that a lot of people who are allergic to cats, find they are not nearly as allergic to the Bengal cat because of their short hair and grooming habits. This can make them good pets for a person who loves cats but is allergic to most.
  • Most cats hate water, but when it comes to the Bengal, very often many of them really enjoy playing in the water. This can be a great trait for anyone who enjoys playing in the water with their pets.
  • Not all of Bengal cats like being trained on a leash, there are plenty of them who truly do enjoy it because they like going for walks with the people in their lives. So, if you are looking for a cat that you can walk just like a dog, it’s possible that a Bengal cat could be ideal for you.

Bengal Cats and Water

Even though some of the Bengal cats we’ve come across don’t show much interest in water, most of them really enjoy it. Their enjoyment of water is something we find to be quite charming and entertaining as cat owners.

A lot of them love to drink the running water right out of a faucet or even a water fountain. Don’t worry, they love their water bowls too. Often they find it extremely entertaining to actually play with their water that’s in their bowls or out of the faucets. Sometimes you will find them playing with the water by slapping their paws across the water’s surface like they’re trying to get something off the top of the water. Other times they can be found dipping their paws in the water and trying to lift water out of the bowl and then will lap up the dripping water off their paws. Some Bengals simply love literally splashing around in the water. Unlike many other cat breeds, Bengals are definitely are not afraid of water.

Something we’d like to give you a heads-up about is that some Bengal cats really like jumping right into the shower or the bathtub when you are taking your shower or bath. They seem to really enjoy the idea of sharing that time with their “people”. A lot of these entertaining little cats like to have their own inflatable kiddie pools so they can splash around with their toys and there are even some Bengals that have been known to actually go for a swim in full on swimming pool, just for the pure enjoyment of it.

Do Bengal Cats Get Along With Children and Other Animals?

Absolutely! Bengals are very independent, but they are also extremely affectionate and they can and will thrive well in a home that is just a single person or with an entire family. They will do well as being the only pet in the home, but they also don’t typically have issues with other animals.  In addition, they love children as long as the children are old enough to understand how to properly handle them.

Since Bengals really love to be active and involved with whatever is going on in the home, they often will do a lot better in a home that has more than one person and/or pet. More people and more pets will often ensure they will be less likely to get bored.

We believe that if you are looking for a cat that is intelligent, easy to take care, easy to train and full of energy, then you need not look any further than a Bengal. Bengal cats make good pets for those who want a cat that is a little different than most other domesticated cats.
